Dental Implants Q & A

What makes dental implants different from dentures?

In years past, patients had few options for replacing missing teeth. They could have bridge prosthetics, which are created by attaching one or more false teeth together, then securing them to the nearby teeth. Dentures are another option and are usually chosen by patients who have lost a significant number of their natural teeth. Dentures are fitted to the patient’s gums and are often held in place by a type of dental adhesive. Unfortunately, getting a proper fit is a difficult task.

Implants are a permanent solution to a lost tooth. They have three parts: the implant itself, which is placed in the patient’s jawbone and eventually fused to that bone, the crown, which is the visible portion of the new tooth; and a piece called an abutment, which serves to connect the implant to the crown. This results in a tooth that is visually indistinguishable from the surrounding natural teeth and is permanently in place.

How long does it take to get dental implants?

Because dental implants are a permanent tooth replacement option, they require an investment of time. First, Dr. Lee determines how the implant will be positioned and discusses the timeline for the remaining visits. Next, the implant is placed into the jawbone during a minor surgical procedure. From that point forward, it takes some time for the body to heal and for the implant to fuse with the surrounding bone. Once that process is complete, the abutment and crown are attached.

Are dental implants a good investment?

Implants are a permanent solution to missing teeth, while traditional prosthetics offer more of a temporary fix. Bridgework and dentures will wear down and break over time, requiring additional office visits and procedures to restore the patient’s smile. Once a dental implant is in place, the patient simply treats the implant the same as his or her natural teeth. When the cost of follow-up care that other options require is taken into consideration, dental implants are an affordable option for replacing one or more missing teeth.
