Fastbraces® Q & A

by James J. Lee, DDS

How long do FastBraces® have to stay on?

This is probably the most common question that new orthodontics patients ask. Unfortunately, there is no fast and simple answer. No two people come into the office with the exact same set of needs, and no two patients will receive the same orthodontic plan. The length of time that a patient will need braces is determined by the degree of misalignment that is being addressed, as well as the role that each patient takes in assisting with his or her care plan. That said, FastBraces® technology allows for a far shorter treatment time than traditional braces, and many patients can be in and out of their braces in just 20 weeks.

How do FastBraces® work?

FastBraces® are comprised of a system of small triangular brackets that adhere to the surface of the teeth, and wires that connect those brackets. Brackets can be made of metal or a clear substance, depending on the preference of the patient. Once the brackets are in place, Dr. James J. Lee, DDS can use the wires to apply the proper amount of tension to the brackets, which is how the teeth are repositioned. In addition, patients will usually be required to wear a removable retainer device for a period of time after the braces are removed to ensure that the teeth are not shifting out of alignment.

What can be done to improve a patient's experience with FastBraces®?

Patients have a great deal of control over how their treatment will progress. One of the most important ways that a person can have a positive impact on his or her orthodontic care is to avoid eating foods that can weaken or detach the brackets, and refrain from damaging habits such as nail biting, chewing ice or using the teeth as tools. Proper dental hygiene is also important to prevent cavities from forming around the brackets.
