This is a common concern among patients who are trying teeth whitening for the first time. Some patients will experience mild to moderate discomfort during the whitening process. However, the Blooming Dental team has a great deal of experience in working with patients with sensitive teeth, and a variety of ways exist to minimize discomfort. Some patients will be asked to use desensitizing toothpaste or rinse for a period of time before whitening. Others will choose to use numbing products during the procedure. We take the time to work with each patient to find the best possible approach.
Patients can achieve a brighter smile through two primary ways. One option is the use of powerful whitening gels that are applied via a set of custom-fit plastic trays. Patients wear these trays for a period of time each day, as the teeth are gradually whitened. Many patients choose an in-office whitening procedure; in this approach, whitening gel is applied directly to the surface of the teeth. Next, a laser or other special beam of light is directed at the teeth, which activates the gel and allows the teeth to be whitened almost immediately. In-office whitening is a faster path to a brighter smile, although some patients prefer to use the trays at home.
No matter if teeth whitening takes place at home or in the dentist’s office, it is not a permanent solution. Over time, teeth will become discolored from smoking or consuming foods and beverages such as tea, coffee or certain types of juice. Refraining from activities that are known to stain teeth can allow patients to stretch the time between whitening procedures. Many patients will eventually have their teeth whitened again in order to restore the wattage of their smile.
